Decisions, decisions, decisions..

Keel London

Businesses struggle with the volume and complexity of decisions, which can lead to misalignment and hidden paralysis over time. A clear Brand Idea acts as the foundational direction, helping teams filter decisions and creating a powerful competitive advantage.

Almost three quarters of executive time is spent making decisions

Running a successful business is hard. Really hard. On the surface, you want your customers, investors and partners to see you as moving forwards, calm, controlled and serene. But the reality may be more like chaotic flapping in unpredictable currents, avoiding lurking predators and hidden dangers.

And one of the unseen dangers is a paralysis of decision-making. For CEO’s and their management teams, every day brings another decision or twenty. About products, initiatives, partnerships, profit, loss, mergers, acquisitions, investments, priorities, opportunities, talent … not to mention when to hold the Christmas Party.

The neat, tidy version of running a business – set direction, execute, repeat – rarely exists in the real world. In reality, leadership is a constant stream of judgement calls. Here’s some facts for you – executives spend almost 40% of their time making decisions, according to research from McKinsey & Company. Yet most believe a large portion of that time is poorly used. In fact, 61% say at least half the time they spend making decisions is ineffective, and only 37% feel those decisions are both high-quality and timely.

Every decision should drive momentum and progress

Decisions are great for business. A series of ongoing (good) decisions are how businesses grow and evolve with certainty – about who that business is, what is should become, what it might acquire and what it should leave behind to stay competitive.

But when decisions slow and inertia sets in, momentum disappears. Many business leaders may be almost unaware this happening as, slowly but surely, an unseen paralysis takes hold. And this invisible force has a massive impact on the way a business runs and performs.

A business may start doing more things and be seemingly ‘busy’, but it’s less certain about why it’s doing all these things. An organisation may slowly lose sight of what it actually stands for and becomes a disconnected bundle of propositions and products.

Internal teams become confused as different departments prioritise different outcomes. And customer preference for your business weakens and sales, at best, stagnate, or at worst, dip.

And, saddest of all, the brand is no longer the hard-working tool it should be.

And, of course, the way in which we work today has made all of this harder, not easier. Economic uncertainty and the definition of ‘value’ becomes harder to define. Products are more complex, categories overlap and differentiation gets harder. Tech acceleration and Ai integration is rapidly expanding the number of channels and audiences. Talent attraction and retention is a fight for the best.

Direction is a competitive advantage

So how can a business find its inner swan? We believe that having a clear foundational direction is vital. A unifying idea that defines what a business stands for, the direction it’s going and the value it brings to the world. And this foundational direction is what we call … the Brand Idea.

A Brand Idea is the central organising principle of the business. The belief that sits beneath everything you do — from services and product development to communications and culture. When you have a Brand Idea at the heart of your business, it becomes something incredibly useful: a decision filter. Now that might not sound like the most glamorous thing your business could have but – here’s the thing – everything can be run through it.

Let’s think of some typical scenarios you might be in – acquiring another business, spinning up a go-to-market strategy for a new product, retaining your talent pool. With a Brand Idea in place, you can ask yourself …

Does this ALIGN WITH the BRAND idea, or dilute it?

Is this something our BUSINESS would naturally do?

Would our customers AND PROPSEPCTS expect this from us?

Does this make us more distinctive or more generic?

Suddenly, discussions become clearer AND GOOD DECISIONS HAPPEN. It’s a beautiful thing. Think about organisations like Apple, Nike or Patagonia. Each has a clear, underlying belief guiding all of its decisions. Apple consistently champions human-centred creativity. Nike relentlessly celebrates achievement. Patagonia anchors its business in environmental responsibility. These companies still face difficult choices. Every business does. But their foundational idea already defines the direction and that allows them to move faster than competitors who are still debating the basics.

Be more swan

A strong foundational direction – the Brand Idea – lets you be that swan – calm, in control with strong and powerful presence. Sure, those feet paddle hard, but they paddle purposefully. With a Brand Idea, your business gains something invaluable: certainty on where you’re heading. The decision that frames all the others. Which is why defining the right Brand Idea may be the most important decision a business ever makes.

And that’s why Brand Ideas Change Everything…

Key takeaways

  • A lack of clear direction leads to slower decisions, misalignment and paralysis. Foundational direction keeps a business focused and moving forward.
  • A strong Brand Idea provides a clear filter for decision-making. It helps teams confidently evaluate what to pursue and pursue and what to walk away from.
  • Clarity is a competitive advantage. Businesses with a defined foundational direction operate with more speed, alignment and consistency.
  • Without it, businesses risk becoming reactive and fragmented. With it, they gain a unifying force that connects strategy, culture and execution.
